Read how this move aims to modernize education, foster multidisciplinary learning, encourage research, and support faculty development. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration of West Bengal has announced the adoption of the National Education Policy (NEP) in institutions beginning with the academic year 2023–2024, which is a key step towards revamping the educational system. This action intends to modernise the state's higher education system and bring it into compliance with the NEP 2020's national framework.

The implementation of a four-year undergraduate programme is one of the major adjustments that will be made under this new strategy. The current three-year undergraduate programmes now provided at institutions throughout West Bengal will be replaced by this programme. Students will benefit from a more thorough learning experience thanks to the expansion of the undergraduate programme, enabling them to specialise in the subject they choose to study.

The NEP's implementation will also place a strong emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to education. This implies that students will have the freedom to select courses from a variety of areas, allowing them to expand their knowledge and skill sets. Students' capacity for creativity, critical analysis, and problem-solving will be boosted by the interdisciplinary approach. The NEP's emphasis on research and innovation is a further important feature. To encourage staff and students to conduct cutting-edge research and develop knowledge in diverse sectors, the new policy will create a research-oriented atmosphere in institutions. This will foster a culture of creativity and entrepreneurship in addition to improving the quality of education.

The West Bengal government intends to give the faculty members the necessary training and assistance to ensure the NEP is implemented successfully in institutions. To acquaint the instructors with the new curriculum, instructional approaches, and evaluation methods, training programmes will be set up. They will be able to successfully instruct the kids and present the updated curriculum thanks to this.

The NEP will be implemented in colleges starting with the next academic year, which is a crucial step towards changing West Bengal's higher education system. The state wants to improve educational quality, support students' holistic development, and get them ready for success in the dynamic and competitive global environment by adhering to the national framework.
