UGC committee suggests new names for university degrees: Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Humanities

Albeit the panel has suggested involving BS classification for degrees across disciplines, it hasn't allowed the utilization of BA and MA for science programs. Keeping in accordance with worldwide standards and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the country's advanced education controller is ready to present another scope of advanced education names, including a Four-year certification in Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in disciplines like arts, humanities, management and commerce. Currently, universities are permitted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. On the other hand, a Bachelor of Science (BSc), which is more commonly abbreviated in India, typically focuses on science subjects.

A committee set up by the UGC to review degree nomenclatures has recommended that the new four-year undergraduate honours (or honours with research) degree program, regardless of the discipline, can also be offered as a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, despite the fact that the NEP 2020 supports reorganizing undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. According to the report, the program designation on the degree certificate that students receive can also read "Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Science in specialization" in the case of a major subject or specialization at the undergraduate level. A Bachelor of Arts in Music, for instance, may also be abbreviated as BA (Music).

These programs are open to interdisciplinary and novel specializations from the university. While the levels of BVoc and MVoc will proceed, furthermore, professional projects can likewise be presented as BA, BCom, BSc, or BS in professional examinations at the undergrad level, the board suggested. The M.Voc can also be offered as an MA, M.Com, MSc, or MS.

For clarity and ease of reference, the commission will provide a comprehensive list of all new changes, including the names of all degrees previously specified.

Nonetheless, the board has explained that the new degree names may be pertinent on a "forthcoming premise" and existing degree names will keep on being utilized even after the presentation of the new names. As a result, both the four-year honours degree program and the three-year honours degree program will continue.
